WASHINGTON — Marion "Christopher" Barry, Jr., the only son of Washington, D.C.’s late embattled Mayor Marion Barry, died early Sunday, WUSA-TV reported.

The younger Barry, known to his friends as Christopher or Chris, died of an apparent overdose on synthetic marijuana, The Washington Post reported, quoting those close to him. No official cause of death was immediately confirmed.
In a statement, Cora Masters Barry, Marion Barry’s widow, said: “My heart is broken.
I am in shock. The news of his death is beyond comprehension.”

Barry, who like his late father had struggled with drug use, had run in 2015 for the city council seat his father held before his death in 2014.
Barry’s mother, Effi Barry, died of leukemia in 2007 at age 63.
